This work is translated from the MS. of the author, and is a valuable contribution to the literature of Northern Morocco.
The Bibliography, a revision of No. 1705, is a supplement to Renou's very unsatisfactory catalogue ; it is arranged alphabetically according to the names of authors, and contains 527 entries of works, though many are inaccurate and imperfectly given, and numerous references to maps and plans.

Henri de La Martinière vint pour la première fois au Maroc en 1882 comme chargé de mission archéologique par le ministère de l'instruction publique. Il prit part en 1885 à l'ambassade de Féraud. Il resta à la Légation de France de 1887 à 1891 et fit en 1887 et 1888 des séjours à Volubilis. En 1891 il entra au cabinet des affaires indigènes à Alger, revenant en 1899 comme premier secrétaire à la Légation de Tanger qu'il géra de 1900 à 1901 en l'absence de Revoil. En 1902, il fut nommé consul général à Rome. En 1892 il fut correspondant du Temps au Maroc.
