1883. Cowan, G. D., and R. L. N. Johnston. – Moorish Lotus-leaves : Glimpses of Southern Morocco. London: 8vo, pp. 286.
Life in Mogador and its vicinity, Journeys to Merakish and Agadir, and a good chapter on Moorish cookery. The information is accurate. Reviewed in « Athenæum, » 1883, pp. 438-9.

The account of the travels of these two friends, respectively resident-merchant and vice-consul of Mogador, is a charming counter-blast to their many contemporaries. Thoroughly at home in Morocco, lodging with friendly tribal sheikhs and shooting partridge with old business contacts, they exhibit none of the customary paranoia and hostility of the average explorer. Johnston also (in the thin disguise of a translator) produced The Songs of Sidi Hammo, 1907, a book of verse that offers startling revelation into the secret philosophy of the Berbers.
