He adopted the garb and religion of the Moors, entered as surgeon in the service of the Sultan, and enjoyed the friendship of the Grand Sherif of Wazzan.


G. Rohlfs né près de Brême en 1831 et commença sa carrière africaine en 1853, comme engagé à la Légion étrangère. En 1861 il vint au Maroc, essaya d'entrer au service de l'Espagne, quitta Tanger sous un déguisement, visita Fès et Marrakech, fut jusqu'au Sous, visita le Tafilalet. En 1864 il se rendit au Touat. Il mourut en 1896. Il écrivit de nombreux articles sur le Maroc et les questions africaines, notamment dans Das Ausland et Globus.
