Thomas Shaw, who spent thirteen years in Algiers as chaplain to the factury of English merchants, published his Travels or Observations relating to several parts of Barbary and the Levant in 1738 (and added a supplement in 1746). The work is illustrated and, even if Shaw describes the inhabitants and the natural life of the countries he visited, he places a strong emphasis on Roman inscriptions and antiquities not only in North Africa and Egypt but also in Greater Syria.
