(4 Volumes, London: 1757-1772) presented approximately 480 beautifully hand-colored plates of men and women of various times and countries all around the world, after the designs of Holbein, Vandyke, Hollar, and others. The plates have been a major source for costume design in opera, ballet, theater ever since. The present example was in the library of Carton House, County Kildare, the Irish seat of the Fitzgerald family, Earls of Kildare and Dukes of Leinster.
